Fermo
Fermo has a great history, dating back to 264 A.C., it was a roman settlement and its structure shows four levels: in the first one there are hand-crafted activities, in the second one there are churches and several medieval buildings, while in the third one we find Piazza del Popolo and the main architecture of the city, like the town hall, the see of archibishop, the teatro dell’ Aquila, the Palazzo dei Priori, the picture gallery and the library. The last level presents the square of the “Girfalco”, where the cathedral has its see; in this cathedral the chasuble once belonged to the archibishop of Canterbury,Tomas Becket, is preserved. The Roman cisterns are one of the most interesting and important building of Fermo dating back to the Roman period; they are thirty huge underground connecting rooms, dug underneath Piazza del Popolo, once used as water tank for the city and for the close port (Marina Palmense). We certainly suggest you visit the picture gallery, where you can admire the famous painting “Natività” of Rubens. The eminent past of the city lives again, each year, on the 15th of August, during the Palio dell’Assunta, an historical reenactment where also a challenge among knights belonging to the ten city districts takes place.
