Grottammare
Grottammare is a nice town of the “Riviera delle Palme”, situated in an enviable geographical position, near a wonderful valley; each year many tourists choose it in summer as preferred location. The town develops into two levels, the oldest one, situated on the hill, within the attractive historic village, certificated as one of “the most beautiful village of Italy”, and the other one, on the seaside, where the urban settlement has recently grown. In the upper part of the town we suggest you visit the ruins of the old castle, the Romanesque church of San Martino (XI cen.), the church of Sant’Agostino (XVI cen.), piazza Peretti, where we find suggestive balconies from which you can enjoy a wonderful view of the city below, il teatro dell’Arancio, lively centre of the cultural life of Grottammare, the church of Santa Maria ai Monti (XVII cen.), a place dear to the believers and also known as “oasi di Grottammare”.Every time the 1st of July occurs on Sunday, in Grottammare the “Sacra Giubilare” takes place: here plenary indulgence can be got. According to tradition, this celebration was allowed by Pope Alessandro III as mark of gratitude to the town for the hospitality demostrated to him.
