Montefortino
Montefortino is one of the cosiest and most appreciated summer tourist centre in the Monti Sibillini. In addition to the historical and artistic heritage, it offers also a naturalistic-environmental one, due to its privileged and suggestive geographical position and to the landscape beauties connected with the charm of the Sibillini. The old town centre is one of the most beautiful ones in the surrounding area: here we suggest you visit the Tempietto dell'Orologio and Leopardi palace, seat of the picture gallery Fortunato Duranti, offering one of the most important public art collections of the region, the church of Sant'Agostino, with the sixteenth-century bell tower, the church of Madonna della Fonte, whose interior is totally decorated with frescoes dated back to the same time. Not to be missed is a visit to the sanctuary Madonna dell'Ambro, also known as the “little Lourdes of Sibillini”: built before the year 1000 in a suggestive place along the river Ambro, each year, especially in the month of May, many pilgrims and believers coming from all parts of Italy come here, where are conserved also some frescoes of Martino Bonvini, a picture representing the Annunciation painted by Domenico Malpiedi and rich wooden interiors.
