Castignano
Castignano is a small town propped up by a huge wall, with a Romanesque tower. The old centre, with its Romanesque churches, Renaissance and medieval houses, its labyrinth of narrow streets looks very suggestive: the parish church of Santi Pietro e Paolo is certainly the most interesting architecture, dating back to the fourteenth-century and built on the “acropolis” of the town; in the crypt dell'Addolorata there are frescoes of Vittore Crivelli and of the school of art of Cola d'Amatrice. The Romanesque-Gothic church of Santa Maria del Borgo, built in the fourteenth-century by the Knights Templar, was their funeral chapel, while the church of Sant'Egidio (1700) preserves some signs of the presence of the Franciscan friars in Castignano. To the Templars order and the medieval tradition each year in summer the festival “Templaria” is dedicated, a cultural event with theatre, music and dancing shows.
